Zurich definitely tops my list of places to bring in holidays. I have been lucky enough to be in Zurich during the Holiday season twice so far. There is something so magical about the Christmas decorations, holiday food and gifts, or just the holiday cheer that makes this whole city glow. The warmth of holidays definitely beats the cold all that snow brings in. You have to be there in person just to see all this magic which can barely be covered with words or photos. Here is my list of “Must-Do Things”:
Admire the Swarovski crystal laden tree at the Christmas market at Zurich’s Hauptbanhof
You may call it dramatic (or filmy if you are a sucker for Bollywood movies like me) but there is nothing like arriving into this city and be welcomed by a Holiday market right at the central train station. And it’s not like any other Christmas market in the city since this one houses a Swarovski crystal adorned Christmas tree at the center of it. Apparently, it’s also the largest covered Christmas market in the whole of Europe. Treat yourself to some Hot chocolate or Gluhwein (Mulled Wine) or if hungry, then go for Raclette. If you are on your way out of town, be sure to check some of the shops which have exquisite things to sell that make for perfect Christmas gifts.
Eat champagne truffles at Teuscher
Teuscher confectionary is world famous for their chocolates truffles. But the holiday season makes them bring out the best of the best. Go overboard on their champagne truffles that are only available during the holiday season. Believe you me, they are worth every single Franc you will spent. Also, the store in old town goes all out with the holiday decorations, and you will see red, white and gold pop out much more than the chocolates. This store will definitely bring out the inner kid in you.
Get transported to an enchanting world at the Illuminarium display at the National Museum
The inner courtyard of the National Museum gets converted into a totally different world at night during the holidays. Spectacular light installations, illumination, illusion, fabulous music and winter culinary delights make it a Winter Wonderland. It’s a total sensory treat in my opinion. The facades have a 30 mins light show projected on them featuring all the mythical creatures who play music on their instruments. There are food stands and an illuminated cocktail bar to keep you full at all times.
Go (even window) shopping at Banhofstarsse
Zurich’s main (also the most expensive and most exclusive) shopping street gets lit up with 12,000+ LEDs Christmas lights starting from the train station leading all the way to the end. Apparently, these lights are referred to as “Lucy”. The stores are open late to welcome holiday shoppers and the window displays are an absolute treat to the eyes.
Listen to the Singing Christmas tree
Year after year, visitors from all over the world are delighted to listen to the singing Christmas tree in Wermuhlepltaz Christmas market. This Christmas tree is definitely like no other you may have seen. Be sure to grab a glass or two of hot chocolate or mulled wine and enjoy this performance and join in when the carols begin.
Ice skate at the Christmas village near the Opera House
Christmas market will be an understatement to describe this huge area next to the Opera House which could easily pass off as a small village. It’s the most favorite Christmas market of the locals. There is so much going on here right from international food stalls, candle making to ice skating. It reminds you of Santa’s fabled home and immediately transports you to the North Pole. Also, be sure to check out the Opera house glowing in red.
Have you celebrated the Holidays in Zurich? What are your favorite things to do? If you think your hometown or current city does the best holiday celebrations, let me know and I would like to add it to my travel list !!!
